Denver Day 1

–Nick–

Well, we made it to Denver at least. The drive through eastern Utah was hot, dry and beautiful. We stopped briefly in Green River Utah and took a dip in the green river, which is definitely more brown than green. I still have some silt between my toes. The whole time we were on the road, bill was on the phone (or two) or on his laptop or both. I’m incredibly impressed wtih his organizing skils. From a truck cab in the middle of desolation he managed to line up speakers for the big backbone event on Tuesday. Daryl Hannah and Jim Hightower, just to name two.

Internet access is harder to come by than we expected, the last post was from a coffee shop in Price, Utah and this one will be posted from a neighbors lawn in the middle of the night.

Just had a strategy meeting with the new arrivals. This seems like a really killer crew, the energy is running high. I was planning on returning to Vashon after the RNC in the twin cities, but if the whole trip is going to be this much fun I dont think I can leave until it’s done.

Quick Cathch up; We stayed last night in El Jebel Colorado, at the house of a brilliant burning man devotee. Arrived in Denver at around 1:30 in the afternoon and Bill immediately led a “drumming for demonstrations” workshop in civic Center park. Bill, with his seemingly endless connections, hooked us up with an organizer from tent state, so all of us (Matt, Carly, Bill, Logan, Doug and myself) are sleeping on an apartment floor just outside of downtown Denver.  It is now very late and we have to be in Civic Center Park at 6:30 AM to set up a few of the puppets for the anti-war march tomorrow. The fatigue from the road is still kicking my ass, so I will leave you with a few pics from the road and a few first impression shots from Denver.

You guys are awesome. As I am writing the second draft of my book on teaching art for social change (it’s due to the publisher at the end of the week), I feel bound to keep in touch with you and learn from your experience. It will inspire me as I pull my hair out, trying to find just the right words to inspire others.

I wish you courage, laughter, gentleness, sufficient energy and restful sleep!
    In solidarity, beverly

It’s good to see you guys got the site back, I hope you do as well at Denver as at G8. Maybe next year we’ll see each other in the Portland/Seattle area.
